UA Pre and Post Op

Surgery, it can be daunting.

A lot of unknowns, scary terms and don’t even start with the listed risks (death is usually in there- rather a scary one), so most people have a lot of questions rightly so.

One of them normally is do I even need surgery?

Well, it depends and for certain injuries there is some good evidence for non-operative options. For some injuries though it’s pretty clear cut (excuse the pun).

Physio is designed to get you back doing want you, but we feel is just as important when it comes to surgery is answering any questions, explaining the process so you have a clearer picture of what to expect with your surgery -before, during and after.

Physio is generally the obvious choice post-surgery especially for shoulders, spines, knees, hips and ankles among others and aim to reduce your pain, restore your movement and strength and best of all get your function back to enable you to do the things you want to do again.

Post-surgical (post op) rehab is a journey and one that we love, but before we get started on post op rehab, the importance of doing a little work pre surgery (pre-hab, rehabilitation before surgery) can have a dramatic effect on your recovery out the other side it.

Research has shown significant gains in post op function, just by getting some dedicated pre surgery exercise in.

So if you are waiting to having surgery, then can do yourself a massive favour by getting a properly thought out pre-hab treatment plan in place, especially around strength, the stronger you go into your surgical journey, the faster and better you will bounce back post-surgery. We can even work around pain and movement problems that can commonly be present pre surgery.

You’ve been under knife, now what happens?

With literally well over a 1000 post op surgical plans under our belt we think we know a few things about it. It’s a journey, it’s generally never easy or consistent so understanding what’s happening and why is really important for you (and us).

The rehab exercises and treatment plans need to be right obviously but answering the questions along the way to give you an understanding on what you are experiencing and why we think is just as important.

Our post op rehab is tailored to you and your stage and we use a combination of hands on work to get you moving again, then progress you to our gym based work. If you are looking to get back into sport we follow very specific guidelines and will let you loose after you’ve passed our return to sport testing program.
