Frequently Asked Questions.

  • How can Physiotherapy help me?

Physiotherapy can help reduce pain, restore movement, and get you back to the activities you love. At Urban Athlete in Auckland CBD, we combine expert knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and injury recovery with hands-on experience and clinical reasoning to create tailored treatment plans. Whether it’s recovering from injury, improving performance, or preventing future problems, we’ll guide you every step of the way.

  • Do I need a GP referral for physio?

Nope! You can book directly with us at Urban Athlete. We’re an ACC-accredited clinic, so we can also arrange paperwork for ACC claims when applicable, meaning you can start your treatment quickly.

  • What should I expect?

Don’t be scared, but we’ll ask a lot of questions as we really like getting to the underlying cause of your injury and symptoms. We’ll test you out to figure out what’s wrong and then give you a detailed explanation of our findings and come up with a tailored treatment plan to get you going again.

  • Choosing Your Initial Physiotherapy Appointment

    🕒 30-Minute Initial Appointment
    Ideal for:
    - Mild or recent injuries
    - Quick assessment and treatment
    - Returning clients with a familiar issue
    - Busy schedules needing a shorter session
Includes: A focused assessment, hands-on treatment (if appropriate), and a simple plan to get you started.

🕒 45-Minute Initial Appointment (Recommended for most new clients)
    Best for:
    - Complex, long-term, or multiple concerns
    - First-time physiotherapy clients
    - Post-surgery rehab or chronic pain
    - Those wanting a more thorough plan from day one
Includes: A detailed assessment, treatment, and a personalized recovery plan.

  • How long will my appointment take?

Initial appointments are available as either 30 minutes or 45 minutes — the choice is yours! Your physiotherapist will guide you during your first visit and recommend the most suitable length for any follow-up sessions, based on your individual needs.

Follow-up sessions are typically 30 minutes long, but if more time is needed, your physio will let you know and recommend a 45-minute session when appropriate.

Specialist services such as Muscle Balance Assessments, Pelvic Health Appointments, and Running Assessments may take up to 60 minutes.

  • How many appointments will I need?

We’ll chat through this once we’ve assessed what’s going on and the severity of your injury, some injuries need only a few appointments where others might need a bit more rehabilitation work. Your physiotherapist will guide you.

  • What hours are you open?

We’re open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:30pm.

  • What should I wear to physio?

This depends on the site of your injury. Quite often, we need access to the muscles being treated, so bringing a pair of shorts and a singlet is usually best. However, we also have a wonderful and fashionable range of clothing available onsite for you to use.

  • Working with Southern Cross

For those of you with Southern Cross health insurance, we're part of their Easy-Claim scheme, which can help cover the cost of your physiotherapy treatment. Just let Charlie know, and she’ll check everything and take care of it for you.

  • Can you refer for imaging?

Yes. Our physiotherapists can refer directly for X-rays and ultrasound scans for injuries such as knees, shoulders, tendons, or spinal issues to help confirm your diagnosis and guide treatment.
If further imaging such as an MRI scan is required, we can arrange onward referral to a Specialist or Sports Doctor who can provide the appropriate MRI referral and interpretation.

  • What is your Cancellation Policy?

We understand things come up, but consistency is key to your progress.

Please give us at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule.

Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice may incur a $55 fee, and missed appointments may be charged in full.

Keeping your appointments helps you stay on track and ensures we can support all our clients effectively.
